Gnu, Kaos. Sorry to hear of your loss.
I thought you might like to know that, after listening to your Nation episode, I was inspired to teach my first Terry Pratchett novel for a Year 11 ATAR English course. The class responded brilliantly, some borrowing my copies of Discworld books after we read the last few heartrending chapters together. They were desperate to know why this novel isn’t film, but delighted to hear that it’s been a staged production. We had a huge range of philosophical conversations about life, the universe, and everything- and a tumultuous explanation of circumcision! To finish the term, we had a Nation-themed mocktail challenge (‘Today Is a Good Day to Die’ won) and watched Muppet Treasure Island with our fruity drinks, and somehow I knew you’d both approve.
Thank you for your insightful podcast- I imagine that your impact reaches farther than you know. I probably wouldn’t have considered this novel as a course text without hearing your discussion first. There are now 18 new Pratchett fans in Australian- a fact that I’ll mark as a career highlight.

    • Kate, thank you so much for sharing this – it’s made my day! Nation is such a wonderful book, so what a great gift you’ve given these students. You’re definitely the kind of teacher I aspire to be, and that I remember so fondly from my high school experience! Do let us know if you teach it – or any of this other work – in future.
